Solid Butternut custom hand carved entry door

This is an entry door built of solid Butternut. It was built for a lake home near Ely Minnesota. Butternut was chosen because of it's natural color, a light chocolaty brown that went well with the stained siding of the house. The carvings appear only on the outside of the door. They depict a close-up scene of birch trees and leaves.

The Butternut lumber is harvested from only dead standing trees so there are often imperfections such as worm holes adding to is natural rustic charm. Only dead tress are harvested because it is an endangered species, threatened by an unstoppable airborne fungus blight (sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum). A similar blight was responsible for wiping out both the American Chestnut and the American Elm.
