Solid black walnut custom hand carved entry door

This entry door was built for a large log home on Burntside Lake near Ely, MN. The door is solid black walnut. It is slightly oversized, 38" wide, 2 1/4" thick. The carving was inspired by the surrounding environment, a beautiful landscape full of towering red and white pines. A pair of Bald Eagles were living in the area as the house was being built and they could be seen regularly soaring over the treetops. While John didn't want them to be the main subject of the carving, but they seemed to be a significant part of the feel of this location.

The idea was clinched when the owner of the building was visiting as the house was under construction. He walked out on the deck and noticed over his shoulder a large movement. Turning around, he saw the huge Bald Eagle taking off from his perch in one of the tall pines. He captured the image on his cell phone camera and e-mailed it to me later with the message that my design was a "go". Because there is glass between the carved panels, there had to be two of each carved panel, mirrors of each other, one on each side of the 1/2" insulated glass, so there are six carved panels in all. There were over 150 hours in the carving for this door. The hardware is Emtek - the Denver style sand-cast bronze. The hinges are adjustable so that the entry door can be realigned if settling or shifting occurs in the log walls.
